Getting back to work has many companies redefining their safety and PPE protocols. For construction and industry, PPE has long been a requirement to safe workplace practices. But arc flash suits and face shields were often shared and reused, workspace and supplies were shared, and coworkers often occupied small, confined spaces together. With new guidelines recommended by OSHA and NECA, proper disinfecting and protections are now being implemented to protect employee health from the Coronavirus.
The new regulations do not stop with PPE. To keep workers safe, the CDC is also recommending health screenings to reduce the exposure from individuals who are infected. Screening individuals before they enter a facility can reduce the exposure to other employees, prevent the spread within a facility, and ensure PPE guidelines are being followed. Each state has different requirements, including Pennsylvania, where a mask or face covering is needed for all employees.
Screenings often include a contactless, infrared thermal reading to look for increased temperatures. While a thermal reading may not be conclusive, it is an easy and efficient way to pre-screen. Infrared cameras can be mounted on a tripod to reduce interaction and anyone with an accelerated temperature can be pulled aside for further questioning before admission.
Cleaning and disinfecting measures are also being increased to protect employee’s health. Many facilities are looking to sprayers, UV lighting and other unique ways to keep surfaces germ free between shifts without compromising the project as many sites are sensitive to excessive chemicals and moisture. While these alternatives work for some, the best way to kill the virus on surfaces is still soap and water and an EPA-registered household disinfectant.
