You may not have heard the name, you many not be able to spell it, and saying it properly is an entirely different challenge, but Bonfiglioli is a company I rely on for some of my most challenging gearing needs.
Bonfiglioli is an Italian gear company with over 60 years of gear manufacturing experience. I have personally been designing their large planetary gear units into utility conveyor drive equipment since 2005. So, although many people have never heard of them, they are well established and provide a great value with the breadth and quality of their product offering.
About the company: Their product offering is one of the largest available from one company, ranging from large planetary units to very small precision bevel units. With global sales of over 1 billion dollars generated by the production of over 1 million gearboxes and gearmotors manufactured each year, their international presence provides support to all corners of the world. The soon-to-be expanding 80,000+ square foot US headquarters located in Hebron, KY houses a large amount of product inventory in addition to production and assembly capabilities. In addition to one of the largest ranges of gearing, Bonfiglioli also has broad selection of IEC frame motors and brake motors. A “short” summary of the breadth of the product line is below (yes, it is a large product line.)
The A, C, and F series units are a series of high efficiency, high value helical gear units that I have used in applications for conveyors, payout tables, and draw benches. If one component’s style doesn’t fit the application well from a spatial standpoint, one of the others will. These units are especially helpful when upgrading from a worm gear unit as the increase in efficiency can often allow for a decrease in motor size if a customer is trying to save money on energy usage. There are a several reasons why this trio of units allows for ease of replacement on the majority of the existing gearboxes.
A SERIES: Helical-Bevel torque capacities from 885 in-lbs to 123,900 in-lbs with shaft sizes from 1” to 3 5/8”.
C SERIES: In-line Helical torque capacities from 400 in-lbs to 106,200 in-lbs with output shaft sizes from 5/8” to 4 3/8”.
F SERIES: Parallel Shaft Helical torque capacities from 1240 in-lbs to 123,900 in-lbs with output shaft sizes from 1” to 4 3/8”.
If you are looking for a high quality, compact, and economical drive solution, the VF & W is exactly what you need for your application. The VF style unit is a very compact and configurable unit for lower torque applications while the W Series is a robust, universally mountable, high torque unit. We find these units to come in very handy when space is limited and a high quality to cost ratio is required. These applications include small conveyors, mixers, and roll drives. Worm gear torque capacities range from 115 in-lbs to 7,350 in-lbs with output shaft sizes from 1/2” to 1 5/8”.
The 300 series planetary gear unit is highly configurable and is one of the most economical ways to get a very large gear ratio in a compact package. We have sized and specified these units for large industrial and utility boilers and conveyors, ash handling conveyors, rail car positioning systems, and creamery mixers. The compact in-line design of a planetary gear unit provides for a very low foot to shaft center dimension that can keep even large ratio units from taking up a significant amount of space. The shaft mounted hollow shaft shrink-disc option allows for an even more compact profile by fitting over the driven shaft. One of the limitations of some planetary units is a thermal horsepower limitation due to a combination of high toque and speed. Bonfiglioli mitigates this problem with a configurable input fan or oil cooler and pump add-on that allows for a much higher thermal horsepower rating. Planetary torque capacities from range from approximately 11,000 in-lbs to 11,000,000 in-lbs with output shaft sizes from 2” to almost 18”.
In situations where a planetary gear unit does not fit in the application, the heavy-duty right angle or parallel shaft helical units can provide the right solution. Hollow or solid shaft output options provided flexibility in application mounting. Bonfiglioli also provides an option for oversized bearings for high axial loads for extruder applications.
I get numerous inquires each week asking for information and replacements for European standard IEC frame motors. Many machines built by European OEM’s and purchase by US manufacturers are equipped with these unfamiliar components. These units can be tricky because unlike NEMA standard sizes, each size can have two different flanges; a B5 over-sized flange with thru-holes or a B14 normal-sized face with tapped holes. Bonfiglioli stocks both the B5 and B14 units in multiple frame sizes throughout the power range of these IEC frame units and they are configurable with brakes and encoders if required.
